Prison cell spaces, bodies and touch

Sammendrag

The chapter explores prison cells by putting ontological and epistemological questions at the core of the analysis. Inspired by sensuous architecture and the philosophy of touch, the chapter disrupts traditional understandings of the “prison cell” by exploring various prison cells, their boundaries and extensions. Through Jean-Luc Nancy’s concept touching, the chapter highlights three prison cell spaces: inside cell spaces, corridor spaces and threshold spaces. The material is conducted through a comparative study in two female prisons in Italy and Norway. Elizabeth Grosz’s concept of bodies in-place and bodies out-of-place helps to interrogate profound cultural meanings connected to embodied practices in these various prison cell spaces. The chapter contributes in advancing the academic literature regarding prison architecture by analysing how various prison cell spaces touch and are touched by female bodies.
