Reflections on pastoral care and mizuko kuyo in Japan

Sammendrag

The Japanese word mizuko means ‘water-child’ and refers to a fetus, in singular and plural form. It may also refer to children who have died at young age. Kuyo refers to ritual/memorial service. Mizuko-kuyo is the Japanese ritual for mourning the unborn, or the child that was not born due to selected abortion, miscarriage, and stillbirth. What could be the implications of mizuko kuyo to diaconal work and pastoral care in the Christian church in Japan? Does the Christian church have something to offer in the encounter with mizuko-kuyo?
