Closeness Versus Distance: Relational Aspects of Community Policing

Sammendrag

Community policing is increasingly used as a strategy for bringing the police and public closer together. However, both close and distanced police-public relationships have advantages and disadvantages. How close should the police and the public ideally be? Based on interviews with community-based organizations, NGOs, community members and police officers in urban and rural parts of Kenya, this policy brief analyses community policing through a relational lens, identifying the pros and cons of closeness versus distance in police-public relations.
