Role Independency in Nuclear Power Plant Control Room Teams – Background for an Empirical Simulator Study

Sammendrag

Within the OECD/NEA Halden reactor project, a number of empirical studies have been performed in the HAlden Man Machine LABoratory (HAMMLAB). In some of the studies, observations have been made, which have been unrelated to the main research question. These additional findings often demonstrate interesting aspects. In one study, reanalyzes revealed that crews who worked from their respective workstations performed significantly better than crews who gathered in front of one workstation. In another study, when an addition was made to the shift team with a shift technical advisor (STA) located next to the control room supervisor, the crew's performance was not affected. However, during the study, some random observations were made, indicating that the STA had a better process overview when located in another room. Additional analyses of the STA role and interviews with operators regarding advantages and disadvantages of being located close together vs. at respective workstations have been performed, as well as a brief view into relevant literature on teamwork and group processes. This paper suggests conducting an empirical study in HAMMLAB to investigate whether the STA role gives independent contributions to the team regardless of his position within and outside the control room.
