Amor´s Ease, opera for babies

Sammendrag

Amor´s Ease, opera for babies This operaperformance is created specially for children 0 till 3 years, and their adult companions. The audience is placed in the time of the Baroque period: Two persons are dance and play. One of them trips, falls and experiencing a close to overwhelming pain! Her companion help relieving the pain by blowing it away, but as soon as she is recovered, the companion in her turn falls and hurt herself. The companion experiences a close to overwhelming pain! Luckily the first urge to relief the pain. Comical situations can appear. The baby opera Amor´s Ease, with music composed by Eivind Buene, including an original aria by Henry Purcell, shows how pain can be overcome with a little wind and how caring for someone can make a significant difference. Amor`s Ease, opera for babies is a co-production between Babyopera and the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, and part of Ultima Contemporary Music Festival 2020 The Norwegian Opera & Ballet and the opera ensemble Babyopera are partners in this production consisting of two operas for toddlers 0 – 3 years, which had their premier on September 10th 2020 at The Norwegian Opera & Ballet in Oslo. Each opera has a duration of 30 minutes and is made to be presented in the foyer of an opera house/concert arena, or equivalent venue. Babyopera is a performing arts company specialized in the making of performance for children 0 – 3 years. The previous performances of Babyopera at large, have explored a visual universe, such as life under water, a mountain landscape or a zoological garden for dragons. The focus has been to ”unpack” and explore the universes with their audible, visual qualities. In these two new productions, emotions were unpacked and investigated as material in itself. In the rehearsals, examination were done of the sounds, shapes, colors, temperatures, facial expressions and gestures of basic feelings as loss, grief, pain, comfort, ease and hope. Scenography and costume is formed in the baroque aesthetic, including special effects and surprises. Dance and gestures were borrowed from the baroque, instructed by a specialist in the field. Orpheus Comfort includes the aria ”Jai perdu mon Euridice” from Christoph W. Gluck Orfeo ed Euridice (1762, the Vienna version, and 1774, the Paris version), as a central part for the music composed by Maja S. K. Ratkje. Amor`s Ease is in close dialogue with the aria “What Power Art Thou” from the opera King Arthur (1691) by Henry Purcell. Performers are the Norwegian soprano Silje Aker Johnsen and the Swedish soprano Elisabeth Holmertz. The two performances are a part of the VOeX project at The Norwegian Opera & Ballet, launched by its former Director Annilese Miskimmon in May 2018. VOeX presents new opera productions. Miskimmon stated that the way Babyopera take its starting point in scenography, costume and movement, instead of the music and the libretto, is a unique approach to the creation of opera.
