How the concept of bodily learning challenges teaching and learning in Norwegian Physical Education (PE) based on the Norwegian curriculum renewal reform in school subjects in 2020 (LK20). Operationalizing “bodily learning” in PE

Sammendrag

The Norwegian curriculum renewal reform in school subjects in 2020 (LK20), a political text, includes a description of the concept of “bodily learning” for the first time (Borgen & Engelsrud 2020). In the curriculum renewal reform for Physical Education (PE) “bodily learning” is defined as “motor learning, lifelong joy of movement and body awareness.” This is the first time that “bodily learning” has been mentioned in a PE context in the national curriculum, and we argue that a further discussion of the concept is necessary partially in order to differentiate it from and compare it with the related concepts of “physical activity” and “motor learning” (Borgen, Hallås m fl.2020). We aim with our presentation to contribute to the work of operationalizing bodily learning in PE. Our understanding of learning in this presentation builds on the consensus among researchers that learning is more than being on the receiving end of subject content, and that one object of learning may be a discovery of the self, in which the learner is both the subject and the object of the learning process (Havnes 2014, Säljö 2001, Ronkainen, Aggerholm, Ryba & AllenCollinson 2020). This understanding of learning leads to the questions “what is the learning object?” and “whose bodily learning is projected to occur?” and positions those questions in the context of further theoretical inquiries (see next abstract). In addition, we ask (and will try to answer) what it might mean for PE teachers to promote students' bodily learning instead of taking for granted that bodily learning does and must naturally occur. Does “bodily learning” require a specific pedagogy and teaching method? Should “learning about oneself” in movement be a legitimate way of understanding “bodily learning” in PE? We also discuss how teachers perceive students’ diverse ways of being human bodies as opposed to perceiving them (only as) performing bodily activities?
