Tittel

Tittel

The beaheding of Hazara leader's statue in Bamiyan after Taliban’s takeover in Afghanistan.

Sammendrag

I was called up by a journalist in the culture magazine called Subject who asked me about my opinion about the beaheding of Hazara leader's statue in Bamiyan after Taliban’s takeover in Afghanistan. I am not an expert in Afghan history, but it gave me the opportunity to reflect about iconoclasm in different historical, cultural, political and religious contexts, and how the reception of this particular symbolical act will make us paying more attention about the ideology and politics of the new regime in Afghanistan. Is this just the beginning of a new nation wide policy or will we see a regime with the ambition of cultural unification where a divided past is used for making a shared future? Probably a political ambition based on reconciliation will take many generations in a country with so much war, oppression and cultural conflics. What would be the role of ‘heritage experts’ in countries under rapid societal changes after war and turmoil like we now are witnessing in Afghanistan?
