Responses to an institutional policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to air travel in higher education

Sammendrag

Although air travel is a highly carbon-intensive activity, environmental psychology has largely ignored it. Meanwhile, aircraft passenger numbers have been growing rapidly, a trend which is likely only temporarily interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. A number of institutions are now engaging in efforts to reduce air travel, among them NGOs and universities, but these efforts have not received scientific evaluation. Here we analyze the internal reception of a university-wide, participative project aiming to reduce air travel emissions from business travel at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zurich, Switzerland, with reduction goals effective since 2019. Data are derived from two online surveys administered in spring and autumn 2020 (n = 176 and 473, respectively) supplemented by centrally collected data about flights taken and associated emissions. We find that the majority of respondents consider the topic of emissions associated with air travel in academia important, approve of the ETH Zurich air travel project, and are willing to reduce their own professional air travel. More junior researchers are particularly supportive of reduction efforts, but report a smaller impact of the ETH Zurich air travel project on their own behavior and attitudes. The COVID-19 pandemic tentatively appears to have encouraged both more and less favorable views of air travel reduction in academia in different people, based on different experiences with virtual communication during the pandemic. We encourage environmental psychologists to intensify the study of air travel as an impactful environmental behavior.
