Sammendrag

Research on core stigma that affects an entire organizational category has often focused on category members’ individual coping tactics within fully stigmatized industries. Only little work has been dedicated to stigmatization as a process and how affected organizations collectively engage to prevent growing levels of category stigmatization. Through a qualitative, inductive study of core companies in the heavily contested oil and gas industry, we investigate how established category members conjointly engage in stigma prevention strategies to confront the growing threat of stigmatization. We identify a set of multilayer stigma prevention strategies with important effects at the category level, namely category reinvention. We derive a model of how stigma prevention strategies can lead to category reinvention and contribute to the literature on contested incumbent categories, stigma management, and incumbents responses to climate change in several important ways.
