Multi-sensor Merging for Improved Arctic Sea Ice Concentration

Sammendrag

Traditionally passive microwave radiometers (PMW) have supplied SIC. This SIC has a low uncertainty during the winter (~5%) but increases in the summer due to melting. PMW data have a coarse spatial resolution, at best ~5km when using the 89GHz channel from AMSR-2, and consequently does not always meet user requirements. SIRANO (https://cryo.met.no/en/sirano) and the PhD aim to determine how to optimally combine SAR with PMW to produce an improved higher resolution SIC dataset that obtains the benefits of accuracy from PMW and the higher resolution of SAR. This poster gives an introduction to the research rationale and methods that will be applied during the PhD.
