Sammendrag

Dislocation density mapping can be performed fast on large samples by the use of scattering of light by dislocation etch pits using the PVScan system. Dislocation density was mapped by PVScan as well as counted manually on optical micrographs in areas of varying dislocation density. A linear relation was obtained over more than two orders of magnitude. Some points deviate from the linear relationship, and multiple twins in these areas were found to give a false signal. The diffraction pattern of the laser light from various sources was observed. Scattering of light from grain boundaries was found to resemble scattering from a broad slit, and the first order maximum may be captured by the dislocation detector. Multiple twins resemble a diffraction grating. The shape of the etched grain boundaries and dislocations were investigated by White Light Interferometry. The dislocation etch pits are conical and the grain boundaries wedge-shaped. Scattering of light from the face of the grain boundary groove may result in a scattering maximum that is captured by the dislocation detector. Thus care must be taken when interpreting measurements in areas of high twin density.
