The National Strategy for Quality Improvement in Health Care underscores the resposibility of educational institutions to offer quality improvement courses to health care students. Nursing students at Betanien College of Nursing in Bergen were assigned to closely follow a patient during a day`s work. They collected data and described the patient`s experiences in relation to waits and delays, information received, the quality of patient-personnel relations, tests and procedures. After this exercise the students had a two days theoretical introductory course in quality improvement. Upon completion of the course they were divided into groups, consisting of students from the same ward. They produced flow-chart, cause/effect diagram and quality goal with structure-, process- and result criteria. The groups work ended up with a report. A standardised questionnaire (pre- and post-test) was used to assess the effectiveness of the intervention, and the reports were studied to examine to what extent the students could apply different tools and techniques related to a
