From librarian to teacher - how big is the step?

Sammendrag

Over the last ten years, librarians have got more involved in teaching. Good knowledge within subject but also other knowledge and skills like pedagogical ones are essential. We were interested in finding out more about Norwegian health librarians existing knowledge and possible needs within teaching. A web-based survey was conducted among health librarians. Questions in the survey were about teaching experience, teaching methods, information resources and database searching, information quality, copyright and publishing, marketing etc. The respondants ranged the different items and were also allowed to make free comments about each theme. Important results were that 1/3 of the respondents did not feel confident in giving teaching sessions. Subjects regarded very important among the respondents were o Database searching skills, especially searching EBM resources o Open access and protection of intellectual property o Quality assessment tools and critical appraisal of research studies o Knowledge about designing learning activities, presentation skills and user training assessment o Interaction with faculty teachers The next stage will be to develop a course to support and contribute to the improvement of the quality of librarians? teaching in medical libraries. The survey and course development is part of the ongoing Polish-Norwegian MedLibTrain project - "Become a competent teacher of information skills" - a professional development program for medical librarians. The project was financed by the EEA and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms 2004 - 2009.
