Title: Like passing through the eye of a needle - expartiate experience communicated at home. Many people who hvae been stationed abroad feel thet they have gained knowledge, new skils and attitudes, which they believe are of value for the Norwegian sociaety. They often feel, howeverthat they have no weay of making use of the competence they have aquired during their stayu abroad, when they return. This project gived a better understanding of communication processes going on when people return from international assignments. Three organisations have been studied; two companies and one missionary organisation. The results indicate that stories told have to be in accordance with the prevailing opinions about the host country and the home country (Norway) in ordered to be listened to, and that transfer of competence mainly takes place when it has a very direct relevance to their particular position at home.
