Tittel

Killing children with God's permission? : the rhetoric of retaliation in Psalm 137

Sammendrag

Through an examination of the rhetoric of retaliation in Psalm 137, this article explains how hurt religious feelings culminate in a wish for retalialion over the enemy (v. 9): "Blessed is the one who seizes and smashes your babies to the rock!" Does Psalm 137 then give God's permission to kilI children? The Psalm neither addresses, nor answers this, but interpreters are nevertheless puzzled with the question. The key to understand this prayer for revenge lies in the underlying hurt religious feelings of the characters portrayed in the Psalm. In ancient as well as in modem times, acts of hatred are sometimes justified reftrring to resources of religious traditions and sacred texts, and Psalm 137 is relevant in the context of children and war. lf not read with an ethical consciousness, it is passible to take Psalm 137 as an encouragement to kill children in the name of God.
