Effects on bacterial gut flora from feed and environment supplied with organic acid

Conclusions: 1.- Litter studies with chickens: The counts of C. perfringens and Enterococcus spp. in the chicken’s intestines are reduced by the use of organic acidifiers in the litter. It is assumed then that the risks of developing clinical or subclinical NE and of growth depression are reduced. 2.- Flora diversity: The observations done so far indicate a diminished variation in the E. coli population. It is planned to do Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) on these stains in the close future to be able to verify these observations. It is of considerable interest to learn more about how flora diversity is being affected by the regular prolonged exposition of animals to OA since diversity is a desired quality, especially when we are dealing with normal floras. 3.- In-vitro studies: We want to see whether we obtained a strain with increased resistance/tolerance to OA after being exposed to OA over long time.
