Associative Behavior of Benzyl Alcohol in Carbon Tetrachloride Solutions

Sammendrag

Self-association of benzyl alcohol in carbon tetrachloride has been s tudied by infrared absorption spectroscopic measurements in the funda mental OH-stretching vibration region. Infrared spectra were acquired at 30, 40, and 50 degree C. for varying alcohol molalitites. The spe ctra were collected in a data matrix and analyzed by multivariate res olution methods in order to determine the numbers of different compon ents present in the solution and to find the spectra and concentratio n profiles for each component. The results indicate that the spectral variance can be described by three components, free open monomers, o pen chain oligomers, and cyclic oligomers. The average number of alco hol monomers in the H-bonded aggregates decreases with increasing tem perature in the solution. It was equal to four for open chain aggrega tes at 30 degree C, and equal to three at 40 and 50 degree C. The cor responding numbers for cyclic aggregates were 7 at 30 degree C and 6 at 40 and 50 degree C. The calculating concentration profiles show th at the alcohol monomers are the dominating component throughout the c oncentration range investigated and that there are more open chain ag gregates than cyclic aggreg
