Surviving Gukurahundi - stories of resistance in the play "Attitudes" (Cont Mhlanga 1997)

Sammendrag

This paper looks at how the play "Attitudes" (1997, Cont Mhlanga, Zimbabwe) represents resistance at different levels in the aftermath of Operation "Gukurahundi" - this refers to atrocities in Matabeleland southeast in Zimbabwe where the ZANU pf government tortured and killed ZAPU sympathisers and civilians between 1982 and 1985. "Gukurahundi" is a Shona phrase which means "the rain that washes away the chaff before the spring comes" (The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP), Legal Resources Foundation 1997, 2007). The atrocities were first known on a broad public level when CCJP published the report "Breaking the Silence - building true peace" (1997). The play "Attitudes" comments on the atrocities and tells about different strategies for survival for the suppressed Ndebele people in Matabeleland at that time. "Attitudes" is a comedy; building on a true story of a man who was building a chopper (in the form of scrap art) and was attacked by Central Intelligence Organisation - behind this story several other stories represents resistance. The representations will be discussed within a sociological and cultural studies frame (Hall 1997, Bhabba 1994); discussing how the play express counterhegemonic strategies on the thematic level, in language and bodypolitics (Gilbert & Tompkins 1996, Gilbert 1998, Ashcroft, Griffiths, Tiffin 1995, Rohmer 1999). The paper argues that the resistance is not only deconstructive - but also reconstructing on individual and social level and in relation to the audience. The concept of contingencies (Mouffe 1995) is used to explain how and why "Attitudes" engaged the audience (building on several interviews). In the last decades several of the themes and strategies in "Attitudes" are developed and explored in other plays for instance by Raisedon Baya and Rooftop Promotion - engaging with the present Zimbabwe (Muponde, & Primorac 2005, Hammar & Raftopolous 2003).
