Tittel

Michael Cunningham in Woolf's clothing : intertextuality and genre renewal in The Hours

Sammendrag

Diachronic study of different literary genres shows that they are governed by a number of conventions and expectations. At the same time, they are subjected to dynamic changes through time. In the following I compare Virginia Woolf's 1925 novel Mrs. Dalloway with Michael Cunningham's The Hours from 1999 through the lens of intertextuality. I draw on different theoretical (Virginia Woolf, Mikhail Bakhtin, Julia Kristeva) and popular understandings of intertextuality to illustrate both generic stability and generic innovation. The intertextual relationship between the two novels shows that meaning does not simply lie in a text itself, but is derived from the complex interaction between language, society, other texts, and a variety of ideological discourses from different cultures and different historical periods. Genre thus represents an interface between text and context and intertextuality is a marker that helps illustrate both stable conventions and generic drift.
