Sammendrag

This presentation is a review of the main characteristics of the autochthones breeds in Bosnia and Herzegovina - their appearance, background and production traits, geographical distribution as well as the extend to which they are endangered. The following autochthones breeds in Bosnia and Herzegovina are presented: Bosnian native mountain horse, Bu?a and Gata?ko cattle, several different phenotypes of native Pramenka sheep: Dubski, Privorski, Kupre?ki, Podvele?ki and Stola?ki, Balkan native horned goat, shepherd dog Tornjak and Bosnian dog Barak. According to the official reports of FAO, 20% of autochthones breeds are in danger of extinction. Many studies in Bosnia and Herzegovina show that the number of autochthonic breeds is significantly reduced. There are many reasons for this situation, the main are: giving advantage to high productive breeds, making intensively live stock production, specialization of production and growing needs for animal products in the world.
