Reading, writing and talking in front of the computer screen - new literacy practices in schools

Sammendrag

In this paper I reported from two classroom studies of adolescents in Norway working with information and communication technology (ICT) in their Norwegian classes. The first study deals with pupils reading and writing hypertexts and reflecting upon the differences between reading on page and on screen. The second study deals with 10th graders working together reading texts on the Internet and writing a project report based on the information they found there. These pupils were interviewed about how they worked together, how they sought information and how they evaluated and used this information, how they read the digital hypertexts and how they wrote a text together. Of special interest were the students? reflections on how they used the information from the Internet in their own texts. Did they ?cut and paste? or did they try to create their own ways of saying things? The presentation will concentrate on what these studies can tell us about the way young people reflect upon their own reading and writing practices and discuss what qualitative studies like this can teach us about this important new literacy practice in everyday life at school.
