The relationships among perceived ethnic discrimination, ethnic identity crisis, and ethnic identity exploration

Sammendrag

In the adolescent identity formation literature, negative life events like gender discrimination and difficulties with work and relationships have been associated with increased identity exploration. However, research has rarely examined the relationship between ethnic identity discrimination and ethnic identity exploration. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between perceived ethnic discrimination and ethnic identity exploration in unaccompanied refugees minors, whereby ethnic identity crisis was considered as a possible mediator. The sample consisted of 106 unaccompanied male refugees, aged 14-28 (M = 20,3) who volunteered to take part in the Youth, Culture, and Competence Study (YCC) conducted by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. Phinney's MEIM scale and additional questions regarding participants' experiences of ethnic identity crisis and ethnic discrimination were administered in a survey. Correlation analyses showed that the experience of ethnic discrimination was associated with an increased level of both identity crisis and identity exploration. However, when moved further in an analysis of mediation, identity crisis did not mediate the relation between ethnic discrimination and ethnic identity exploration, as anticipated. This research confirms that ethnic discrimination plays a role in ethnic identity development, but that other mechanisms explaining the association must be sought.
