Evaluation and Categorization of Educational Videos

Sammendrag

The paper is based on evaluations of short educational videos. The evaluation framework contains different theoretical perspectives on how to describe educational videos, e.g. different modes of video use; video used as a communication tool, as observation- and analysis tool or as reflection tool. The evaluation of 132 educational videos has similar results as a previous Australian study, where most of the evaluated educational videos are categorized as communication tool. The paper argues that these modes are too broad to describe and categorize educational videos, and suggests a more specific categorization based on video functionality in learning situation; the use of video as presentation tool, description tool, instruction/ demonstration tool, gaming tool, reflection tool, observation and analysis tool, problem solving tool, drill and practice tool, assessment tool and evaluation tool.
