This project aims to develop knowledge about shared decision-making in palliative care for patients with advanced cancer, and nurses’ role in shared decision-making will be key. Shared decision-making is described as a preferred model for preference-sensitive decisions in health care, and an approach where clinicians and patients make decisions together using the best available evidence.
The PhD-project has a qualitative design and consists of three sub-studies: 1) a systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative research, 2) a thematic analysis of patients and their relatives' experiences and perceptions about their own and nurses' role in shared decision-making, and 3) a phenomenological study of nurses' experiences of their role in shared decision-making processes. Overall, the project will strengthen the understanding of how patients, relatives, physicians, and nurses interact in decision-making processes about palliative treatment and care for patients with advanced cancer, and how shared decision-making can be improved.
