The empowerment of first-time parents’ communicative musicality and its impact on the quality of parenting.

Abstract
This project will report on an education program conducted with first-time parents in relationship to their everyday contexts with their children. The study aims to establish whether mothers and fathers found 4 education sessions on musical communication and singing beneficial for them and their babies as well as reporting how and what kind of “musical tools”, including lullabies and playsongs were used in their daily interaction with their children and why. A focus group of 14 first-time parents will be provided with examples of musical communication, including lullabies and playsongs and asked to communicate musically and sing them to their babies in daily everyday situations and at bedtime at least four times a week over a 1-year period. Data will contain in interviews, diaries and video recordings kept by the parents and will be used to evaluate the value of the education program and the value of musical communication and singing to and with children as a whole through the following inventories of quality: sensitive time and timing, playfulness, affect attunement, musical mindfulness and cultural narratives. One control group of 14 first-time parents who will not benefit from the education program, will also be included and a comparative analysis will be made.
