Reuse and reuse of public buildings - load-bearing structures

Metode

The innovation idea is to prepare a digital guide that can be made available both via the project participants' websites and via Loopfront's existing digital platform in order to reach as many people as possible in a simple way, regardless of the stakeholder's whereabouts.

The project's main innovation will therefore be a process supervisor with the following main structure:

  • Mapping of existing load-bearing construction:what information is necessary to collect in order to assess reuse?
  • Verification of technical properties / reusability as a load-bearing construction: which parameters should be calculated, tested or documented respectively - and who in the value chain performs such verification? When using a third party (here: SINTEF), the guide must contain a text proposal / template for ordering and information exchange.
  • Which, if any, design considerations are special when reusing a load-bearing structure compared to the design of a load-bearing structure built up from new raw materials?

There is no corresponding supervisor today, which contributes to the fact that obtaining knowledge "from scratch" and the subsequent assessment process for re-use is often difficult and very resource-intensive in practice.

Previous pilot projects have shown that it is possible to reuse materials on a large scale, but that it has been a resource-intensive process with limited economic potential. This solution is intended to be useful for those who want to reuse materials by simplifying the process of assessing the materials' suitability for reuse and the materials' condition - so that they can be incorporated into new building projects in the municipality more quickly and easily.

Reuse and recycling of building materials must take place locally as these are processes that must take place within short transport distances in order to be climate-friendly. In addition, the process must be adapted to local building customs and material selection. There is a need for such a solution in Trondheim, and Trøndelag has a sufficiently large number of buildings and you have the right expertise needed to make such a solution work in practice.

The construction industry is undergoing a transformation towards a greater share of reuse in new buildings. Development towards a more circular economy and greater focus on reuse, both nationally and internationally, makes the results of this work interesting beyond Trøndelag.
