This project addresses the cultural heritage management in coastal communities that have been depopulated or that have had a dramatic population reduction. It is an interdisciplinary project witth an aemphasis on archaeology and it is based on co-operation between eight different institutions. The focus is local and regional, but the themes are of general character. The landscape of “Coastal culture” is the chosen thematic framework because this setting emphasises some of basic relations when it comes to cultural heritage, between research, national, regional and local management as well as local politics. Three different main objectives are equally important. To investigate models for local involvement in the management of cultural heritage. To establish an efficient and reliable method of mapping the cultural resources through focus on landscape and to develop tools for prognosis To establish a scholarly cultural history which is closely linked to the cultural landscape of the study areas.
