Several studies report that students and young professionals are more vulnerable to psychological distress than the general population. Apart from the personal burden of anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation that this represents for the student, heightened psychological distress among health students may contribute to impaired academic performance, attrition, and cynicism and lack of empathy when working with patients. The students and young professionals were followed over a period of nine years, with four measurements points.
