Sammendrag
From 1995 to 1997 Telemark College and Tel-Tek participated in Norcem’s
EU project on NOx reduction in the cement industry. In this project,
alternative fuels, such as chipped car tyres, plastic waste and RDF (Refuse
Derived Fuel) were tested as reburning fuel in a precalciner. It was
shown that burning of alternative fuels may have a significant effect on
the operation of the kiln, energy consumption and emissions to air.In
1998 a new dr.ing prosject was started. This project is part of the Scancem
Doctors of Engineering Project. In this new program we want to investigate
combustion of alternative fuels in environments similar to the environment
in a precalciner in our laboratory. The program will also include
methods of characterising alternative fuels such as TGA and full scale
tests in different kiln systems.Improved understanding of the combustion of
alternative fuels in kilns is crucial in order to operate at optimal
conditions. By using alternative fuels an enhanced flexibility with
regard to fuel supply is achieved. Furthermore, the CO2 emission
budget and NOx emission may also be reduced.
