Project 6. Developing a Joint-MS Program in Agribusiness Economics and Marketing, (UMB, Project no. 332 015 for 2006-2007)

Sammendrag

Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H) has expressed a strong willingness to become part of the EU community. Therefore, profound and substantial reforms of each part of society are being undertaken. In that context, public administration is recognizing the need for new knowledge and skills, especially in the area of technical regulations, standards and commercial law. These reforms also affect the private sector and agribusiness in particular. To conform to the EU's higher educational standards, B&H has signed the Bologna and Lisbon Declarations and a new law, "On Higher Education", is on its way to be ratified. The implications of these transitional processes for the Faculties of Agriculture and Economics, University of Sarajevo (FAUS and FEUS, respectively), are substantial. To fully comply with these requirements the FAUS and FEUS are interested to share experiences in curricula reform with more developed institutions, such as the Department of Economics and Resource Management, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (IqR, UMB). The proposed institutional collaboration will increase the quality of the masters education as well, and will strengthen the institutional and human capacity to transfer urgently needed knowledge and information to the B&H agribusiness sector. These disciplines will take on increasing importance with the trend toward closer economic integration regionally and more broadly across the European Union and beyond. Business marketing, strategy, organization and quantitative economic analysis will become increasingly important for academic institutions, think tanks, NGOs, the public sector and the business community. ? Participate directly in the education and training of graduates in relevant areas of agribusiness economics and marketing in two, 2-year academic cycles; ? Instruct 6 full courses and deliver course materials to teaching assistants in the first academic cycle, and instruct 2 full courses and 4 short courses during a second academic cycle; ? Contribute to the development of human capacity by funding six teaching assistants who will work directly with instructors from IqR during the first 2-year academic cycle; ? Strengthen and promote sustainable institutional collaboration between partner institutions through the creation of joint-MS program and/or through joint instruction of courses relevant to both faculties; ? Transfer of experiences in supervision and advising of thesis research in applied economics through the arrangement and participation in a preliminary thesis defence workshop for the students of the first 2-year academic cycle; and ? Assist in the reform of graduate curriculum and faculty development through faculty exchanges at workshops and the presentation of findings of an external evaluator.
