Sammendrag

The prospects of major climate changes pose severe challenges for education. How can schools prepare students to live and act in a changing world? What competencies will future generations need and how should schools be organized in order to develop these competencies among the students? Because of the complex challenges of environmental problems, they tend to be “wicked problems” where solutions are not true or false, rather good or bad, several explanations may be considered, and where scientific knowledge has no self-evident role. A central goal of compulsory education is to prepare students for participation such issues. This includes participation in democratic processes and debates and to take personal action on current societal issues. Democratic participation includes conscious decisions on what party to vote for, know how to develop political engagement to demonstrate and influence undesired risks to the environment, to changing personal lifestyles in response to local and global challenges. We wish to invite stakeholders and researchers with diverse backgrounds to an extensive creative THINK-workshop with the purpose of exploring how schools can apply relevant knowledge in order to develop an education for sustainable development within existing educational paradigms. Teachers, students, teacher educators, climate scientists, climate change researchers, artists, architects and educational researchers will work together for three- four days to present and develop innovative ideas to how schools can change to educate for the future.
