Discovery of the Higgs Boson

Sammendrag

Join us for a two-fold Open Forum event in which Alexander Read will present an insider’s explanation of the Higgs boson, its importance to our existence, and how it was discovered. The talk is followed by a conversation with artist Daniel Slåttnes; a current masters student at the National Academy of Arts Oslo. In which Slåttnes will attempt to decode various complexities attached to this scientific discovery. Alexander Read is professor of experimental particle physics at the University of Oslo and researcher at the CERN laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland, the home of the world-wide web and where the long-sought Higgs boson was discovered in 2012. Read and the particle physics group at the University of Oslo are members of the 3000+ strong ATLAS collaboration, one of the two experimental groups whose discoveries confirmed the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism by which fundamental particles obtain mass and thus led to the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2013 for the theoretical discovery of this mechanism in 1964.
