Sammendrag
In terms of biomass produced by aquaculture,
marine macroalgae are among
the most important organisms with a
total world production of about 14 million
tonnes (fresh weight), mainly as
kelp cultivation in China. Integration
of seaweed cultivation in aquaculture
systems is a new development, in which
fish, shellfish and seaweeds form an
inte grated multi-trophic aquaculture
unit (IMTA). The rationale for growing
algae is a balanced eco system where the
macr oalgae effectively remove excess
inorganic nutrients. Further more, the
algal biomass can be used for various
purposes. A review is given of various
algal species, biological features, farming
methods, and various applications
of compounds from macroalgae.
