Backsourcing : re-integrating knowledge through a global-local shift

The phenomenon of backsourcing has gained increased interest the least years, due to awareness of the real cost of global outsourcing and the importance of keeping manufacturing in-house or in geographical proximity. Previous knowledge regarding this phenomenon is, however, limited. In particular, embracing a backsourcing strategy requires a successful knowledge transfer processes as well as re-integration of knowledge. This paper explores how to achieve a successful knowledge re-integration when organizations employ backsourcing as their new sourcing strategy. To expand the understanding of this phenomenon, a case study from the Norwegian shipbuilding industry is presented and analyzed. Keywords: backsourcing, global outsourcing, knowledge re-integration
