Sammendrag
This paper describes and analysis a layout and regulation, which will give 100% bus priority and no delays for buses at small and medium sized roundabouts. This is done by simple measures without use of traffic signals. The buses on the major road have separate bus lanes aligned in the centre of the road. This means that the most important movements on the major road have no conflict with the buses, and they are not affected by the bus priority. The less important movements (left turn on major road and straight/left turn on minor road) will give way to buses by an extra stop line inside the roundabout. This circulating traffic will get some additional delay, but the positive advantage for buses is much larger. The proposed bus priority scheme at roundabouts without traffic signals will give higher priority for buses and less disadvantages for other traffic compared to most bus priority schemes at signal controlled intersections. This shows that there is a large and unused potential for bus priority at roundabouts. However, further studies should be made to investigate how this regulation will affect driver behaviour and safety.
