Ring resonators as refractive index sensors

Advances in micro- and nanotechnology have led to miniaturization of biosensors with improved performance. Lab-on-a-chip (LOC) devices for both analysis and diagnostics are in demand by the biomedical community. Current practice is to use centralized laboratories with expensive equipment to analyse blood or urine samples. With lab-on-a-chip technology such tests could be localized to doctors offices or even patients homes, drastically reducing waiting times and costs.
