Multivariate statistical techniques in correlation of Late Palaeozoic units in the Arctic

Sammendrag

Multivariate statistical techniques accepting binary (presence/absence) data have been applied to the large data sets. Grouping of units with large similarities (Dice coefficient of similarity) were carried out using a clustering method, with results presented in dendrograms. Combined Q-mode (units) and R-mode (taxa) dendrograms yield the constancy of taxa/units in each data set. Ordination of units were carried out using correspondence analysis (CA), with results presented in scatter plots with units plotted against first (I) and second (II) CA axis loadings. Where applicable, fossil occurrences were punched using the range through method. Statistical analyses were carried out using W. L. Kovach's "MVSP Plus" on an IBM compatible PC. The different fossil groups were treated separately as well as combined (approximately 50 stratigraphical units with 600 taxa occurring in more than one unit).
