In order to implement efficient mitigation strategies, a thorough understanding of actors involved in the building sector is important. This doctoral thesis is an explorative study of craftspeople working hands-on with energy-related tasks in the building sector. It explores how craftspeople undertake their work at both new and existing buildings – which are increasingly undergoing sustainable framing – while also investigating novel practices, roles and tools. The thesis explores the green-shift in the building sector, showing how the practices of craftspeople contribute to sustainable transformations of the sector. This is explored through qualitative interviews – with craftspeople working as energy consultants, developers of their new energy-calculating tools, and craftspeople working with novel building and retrofitting schemes – as the primary empirical data. I explore how retrofitting private dwellings is difficult due to a governance by number. I show how environmental policies have given craftspeople new jobs and roles by engaging them as energy consultants and involving them in the retrofitting of old homes to meet energy performance standards. I show that these new practices have transformed the craftspeople into what I call “green-collar workers”, i.e. workers implementing energy policies hands-on. The thesis also analyzes the tools that these new workers use, especially energy calculators. The prescriptive nature of these calculators does not necessarily facilitate successful professional domestication of the tools.
