Values are the core of human culture. Values describe the culture’s goals, what’s worth striving for, what we appreciate. Values motivate behavior and set standards for human relationships both between individuals, within families and small groups and in the society at large. The realizations of their values are crucial for the psycho-social wellbeing of people. Values change slowly, but when they change the effects are profound. Value change leads to changes in what people expect from family life, their work ethic, their pattern of consumption. The EVS-surveys make it possible to study value changes and their consequences both throughout Europe and on a global scale through the collaboration with the World values project.
