Rock Bursts in Tunnels in the Himalaya – A Case Review

Sammendrag

The aim of this sub-chapter is to present a case from the Himalayan region where rock burst / rock spalling was a serious tunneling challenge. The intensity of the rock burst was so intense that caused loss of several working crew member, delayed excavation progress and tunnel in-stability. The chapter also reviews and links rock burst situation with mechanical and mineralog-ical properties of the two rock types met in almost similar rock cover. It concludes that both rock mechanical properties and mineralogical constituency play an important role in rock burst phenomenon.
