Peak-attraction tourist destination as home place: negotiating public space, daily life quality and belonging

Sammendrag

Peak-attraction tourist destination as home place: negotiating public space, daily life quality and belonging There is a significant trend towards experiential tourism with tourists seeking adventure and authentic experiences of “other” places and “other” people. With a rapid growth in tourist numbers, attractive destinations will become even more popular (peak-attraction) and potentially overcrowded. In peak-attraction destinations, the co-creation of various stakeholders, local residents and tourists may results in public places that are perceived as “tourismscapes”. At the same time, these areas are local residents` neighborhood. In other words, the local daily life is the core of the attraction.   Jost Krippendorf, one of the founders of Responsible Tourism, foresaw the growth of rebellious tourists and called for rebellious locals. Today, this is the reality in many destinations, i.e. Barcelona and Venice. However, a basic principle in the concept of sustainability is the precautionary principle. There is a call for more knowledge of the process of how a responsible destination achieves a balance between residents, visitors and local public spaces, which this study aims to provide. The study will draw upon a conceptual framework that integrates the physical and non-physical aspects of place. By highlighting local residents place attachment and place belonging, the research question is: In what ways do the increased amount of presence of tourists influencing the local residents` behavior and sense of place? To explore this, an exploratory research design is used, and the empirical data is from Henningsvær, a popular tourist destination in Norway.
