Sammendrag
The paper initially briefly examines the discipline of environmental history in relation to the field of historical geography. An example is then presented of a historical-geographical approach to the study of human interactions with the natural environment. In the Vaasa (Vas a) area of Finland, a new cultural landscape has developed on land ar eas which continuously emerge from the sea due to shore displacement, caused principally by land uplift. In the study, the emphasis is pla ced on the institutional basis of human responses to land emergence, particularly land tenure. The paper concludes with a discussion of va rious ways of explaining change in the cultural landscape.
