Seasonal Storage of Industrial Waste Heat

Sammendrag

Seasonal thermal energy storage (STES) can be used to store thermal energy such as industrial waste heat for future use in heating of buildings or for industrial processes. The most common concept for STES is utilizing excess heat that is collected in summer to compensate insufficient heat supply during wintertime. Publications and evaluations for industrial STES are rather scarce in literature. However, for industries to make investment decisions on building this type of large-scale, process-integrated storage systems, evaluations are a key component. This memo gives an up-to-date overview on the current status of STES. So far, the majority of STES systems are using solar thermal heat as an energy source, and district heating networks as an energy sink. Nevertheless, field reports from these systems can still serve as a valuable source of information for future applications in the industrial sector as well.
