Visualisation of the temporal dimension in multi-media presentations of spatial phenomenon

Technological evolution has paved the way for a variety of small dynamic maps. The increasing use of Internet and WWW has played a major role in the dissemination of map applications. Interactive map animations open for a new way of thinking when visualising spatial data. This paper focuses on presentation of the temporal dimension of spatial phenomenon on dynamic maps. The proposed methods are discussed in the light of how people perceive time, and modelled on the basis of theory for common visual variables in cartography. Multi-media presentations are not limited to a graphic visualisation. The audio-channels on the computer can, in interaction with the graphic display, impart useful information by sounds.
