Objectives: To test the psychometric properties of the TeamSTEPPS® Team Attitude Questionnaire (T-TAQ) among nursing students in Norway.
Background: Teamwork has an impact on patient safety. Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Teamwork skills and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS®) offers an evidence-based team-training program with tools, strategies, and measurement instruments(1, 2). The TeamSTEPPS® program was implemented in a bachelor of nursing program in Norway. To evaluate the intervention, the students’ attitudes to teamwork were measured with the T-TAQ. T-TAQ has not been validated in a nursing students’ context.
Design: A cross-sectional study with online- and paper survey was applied
Method: In total,1654 bachelor of nursing students from three campuses at a Norwegian university were invited to take part in the study. The Norwegian version of T-TAQ (consisting of five dimensions, team structure, leadership, situation monitoring, mutual support, and communication with six items each), were handed out to the students. Face validity was discussed with a pilot group of the targeted sample. The data were analyzed using a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Cronbach’s alpha.
Results: The total of 509 nursing students answered the questionnaire. Cronbach’s alpha was .794 for the total questionnaire. The CFA showed a Root Mean Square Error of Approximate (RMSEA) of .051.
Conclusion: The study showed that T-TAQ is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring nursing students’ attitudes towards teamwork in healthcare.
