In this paper, a high performance / low complexity reduced indirect finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) method is developed for MMCs. The proposed approach achieves nearly similar dynamic performance as the full indirect FCS-MPC, at a much lower computational burden. The proposed method is developed from the reduced indirect FCS-MPC which is a computationally efficient control strategy for MMCs. However, the reduced indirect FCS-MPC approach compromises on the dynamic performance of the converter. In the proposed approach, the issue of slow dynamic performance is addressed by allowing the number of inserted modules to change by more than one only in the initial time step within the prediction horizon. The results of the proposed methodology are validated through simulations for 20-level MMC in MATLAB/Simulink.
