Behind Fear

Behind Fear is a performance as a result of the first phase of the research focusing on the social choreographies of fear, part of the PhD research project Social choreographies of Emotion. Dragana Bulut stages choreographies of fear by exploring paradoxes of security and safety culture. Through the playful appropriation of security and wellness procedures “Behind Fear” navigates an external as well as an internal sense of safety and reveals the mechanisms through which our desire for it is constructed. Performance examines the inflation of security and horror of the moving, lurking danger that is too quick to be secured, but real enough to affect. A security team attempts to defend the viewer from the danger that lies in the manipulative power of theatre. A resilient nervous system needs to be fit in order to survive, but how does one cope with threats if they happen in the theatre space? Behind Fear premiered at HAU Hebbel am Ufer Berlin.
