NCS2030 – A national research centre for meeting the subsurface challenges of the energy sector and building a sustainable Norwegian Continental Shelf

Sammendrag

The Norwegian petroleum industry is preparing its future paths toward Net-Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2050, while continuing to supply the world with energy. An energy mix, with the right combination of fossil and renewable energy sources, together with CO2 capture and storage is a viable option. Norway is one of the most important providers of energy to Europe and has major opportunities to become a frontrunner in the sustainable energy transition. To transform the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) into sustainable utilization, a new way of thinking across disciplines and societal acceptance are required. Therefore, it is important to integrate research, education, and innovation to build knowledge and develop technologies towards the optimal utilization of the NCS. In this presentation, we will present the recently awarded Petrosenter to the University of Stavanger and partners, NCS2030 - National Center for Sustainable Subsurface Utilization of The Norwegian Continental Shelf (https://www.uis.no/en/ncs2030) (2022-2029) by the Norwegian research Council (NFR). NCS2030 has the vision to facilitate an energy-efficient, multi-purpose utilization of the NCS subsurface in the transition to a “Sustainable Subsurface Value Chain”. The center represents an unique opportunity were the government (represented by NFR), the research and academic community, and industry (operators, service and innovation companies) work together to meet the future challenges of the energy sector in the NCS towards NZE hydrocarbon production and development of other energy resources in the coming decades. The center considers four important research areas, namely i) Subsurface energy systems, ii) Net-zero emission production, iii) Digitalization and iv) Society, that integrate multi-disciplinary research activities for the Sustainable Subsurface Value Chain. These themes are defined within six interconnected technical work packages. Education of young and existing professionals with new competencies are paramount. The center aims to educate more than 20 PhDs/postdocs and 40 master students during its life time. In addition, NCS2030 will have a dedicated innovation program in order to benefit established research initiatives and networks to create new solutions that get closer to implementation and commercialization.
