Sammendrag
Microscale aluminium joints have been fabricated at the solid-state by means of a novel welding technique that is here suggested. A dual-beam microscope, a FIB-SEM, has been employed both for performing and observing the process and for analyzing the resulting joints.
The technique involves AA6082 and AA1070 aluminium alloys being coupled by plastic deformation under a compressive load, as it occurs at the macroscale for Cold Pressure Welding.
High-resolution SEM pictures of the cross section and EDS analysis on the bonded interface revealed that the method is sufficiently replicable, and the joints have a limited amount of implanted gallium at the grain boundary that should be contained as much as possible in future setup versions. The joint’s mechanical properties are expected to be assessed by in-situ micro-cantilever bending tests.
