Two Disruptive Eco-visualizations: Initial Experiences

In the last chapter of the book, we take some of the key concepts introduced in the previous chapters and introduce the reader to two disruptive communication prototypes currently implemented and tested in the Nature in Your Face research project in Norway: the Lung Tree is an audiovisual installation making the air pollution in cities tangible through constructing a “breathing tree.” The Food Box is an installation visually mapping food waste in a high school canteen on the face of the students. The ideas behind the installations and first experiences with the target audiences are presented. Both installations created engagement in the target audiences, but the Lung Tree installation also demonstrated obstacles that result from unintended disturbance of people living or working close to the installation. The experiences with the Food Box show that the unexpected confrontation with your own food waste can be a potent trigger of creativity to solve this challenge.
